Market concepts

VION Food Netherlands works with four different market concepts, each of which matches up with consumers' wishes in its own individual way. We have translated these requirements back into pig characteristics, feed, housing conditions, and/or environmental effects. Over 90% of Dutch pig farmers work according to one of the following market concepts.

Good Farming Global

Good Farming Global is the market concept in which pigs and meat comply with the specifications of worldwide customers. Of course, the pigs in question are IKB-worthy. Their origins can be retrieved via tracking and tracing. Quality assurance in the chain is guaranteed. These pigs are delivered at weights of 83 to 107 kg. Their backfat thickness is less than 19 mm, their muscle content is at least 57 mm.

Good Farming Star

Good Farming Star is aimed at the pre-packed meat market and is intended for Dutch supermarkets. The concept is characterised by extra attention to animal welfare. Good Farming Star has been awarded one star under the ‘Beter Leven’-kenmerk (Better Life quality mark) of the Dutch Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. These pigs live in pens where they have more space and they have materials to play with in their houses. Male piglets in this concept are not castrated.

Good Farming Welfare

Good Farming Welfare is aimed at the British bacon and fresh meat market. This programme imposes additional requirements in terms of animal welfare standards. The feed for these pigs must comply with strict requirements. The weight limits for gilts and barrows are 82 and 103 kg, weight limits for boars are 80 to 100 kg. Their backfat thickness is less than 17 mm, their muscle content is at least 54 mm.

Good Farming Organic

Good Farming Organic is the production concept for organic pork. This meat complies with all the requirements and regulations for organic production methods which are continually checked by SKAL. The organic pigs are slaughtered at VION Groenlo and processed at De Groene Weg. The meat is sold by supermarkets under the brand name of Bio+ or it is turned into cuts that go to the De Groene Weg butcheries.

De Groene Weg works intensively with a collective organisation of organic livestock farmers. Both parties are continually trying to improve organic production methods and assure sales on a daily basis.
